The 2008 Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest

15 August 2008 00:46

I noticed today on one of the news websites that the annual Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest winners were up for 2008.  You can find it here. For those who haven't seen it before, it's a contest to see who can write the worst first sentence of a fiction novel.  I've always enjoyed them; they're one of the few things that can actually make me laugh out loud--to the point of crying.

Enjoy!

It's too quiet here...

13 August 2008 10:41

When I started this blog, I mentioned that I would like to be writing more.  Obviously, I've had quite a bit of a lapse between the the last post and this one.  And here I am, writing what I typically hate when I see blogs that I like: the "Sorry I've been quiet, but I'm back now" message.

So what happened?  Well, first, I was very busy with project work.  Then I had a week of vacation.  And somewhere in there, I realized that I didn't have topics I felt like writing about.  The writing itself isn't the problem--coming up with something to write about was.

Sometimes, when a work frustration gets me fired up, I realize that I could just write and write--spilling page after page of text onto the blog.  It's difficult for me to stop myself, as my frustration would appear only as a rant to those without my particular perspective, and well, let's face it, I'm not always going to be right.  Since that's the case, I realize that I need to slow down, before I post something on the internet for public consumption.  The same internet with a VERY long memory.

But after vacation, which I really enjoyed, I've relaxed a bit, and started making a list of topics that are near and dear to me.  Topics that are positive.  Not all are programming related.  Some are definitely orthagonal to what I thought I'd be writing in this blog to start with.  Some are probably just random thoughts that might somehow find a direction.  Software Tools to help get work done.  Heroes.  Aviation.  Maybe the occassional rant, if I can figure out how to due it as humor, instead of simply complaining.

So it's time to get started.  Sorry I've been quiet, but I'm back now.
